The chart below will be referenced throughout the next few sections. We'll start in the top left and move to the right, unpacking each column as we go in order to understand the basic workflow and what the responsibilities of each team member are.
In this section, we will look at the workflow prior to getting out in the field and collecting data.
Pre-design is ideally completed in the office before field teams are deployed. The purpose of predesign is to use office tools to speed up data collection teams. The vast majority of route designs can be drawn in using aerial imagery and street view. Reference layers can also be better utilized from the office view to help determine routes and seed poles and other nodes on the map. Teams in the field should still understand these tools in order to correct routes as needed once in the field.
To learn more about pre-design please see the Pre-Design training section.
Before teams leave the office or hotel, they will want to make sure they are prepared for the day. Teams should have all of the required equipment as well as any of the recommended equipment they will need, such as plenty of spare batteries and a way to charge phones and mobile devices. Teams should utilize PPE and have a safety plan in place that covers different situations such as working along roads with high traffic, walking through customers private property, and coming across different environmental hazards. It's also a good idea to ensure you can access each job to be completed during that day and if necessary, have them downloaded for offline use. Finally, coordinate with team members about where you will begin the route and park vehicles.
